Meanwhile, several people were injured, including two seriously, in a crash near Rotorua overnight.
Emergency services were called to State Highway 30 at Rotoma, near Matahi Rd, about midnight.
A Hato Hone St John spokesman said six people were assessed. Two were taken to Rotorua Hospital in a serious condition and two were taken to Whakatāne Hospital in a moderate condition.
A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said three trucks were sent to the single-car crash and crews helped police and ambulance services.
A police spokesperson said the crash is being investigated.
