The officer chased the man and caught him on Customhouse Quay with help from the Wellington police beat team.
Inspector Paul Hamlyn said it was fortunate no one was injured.
“Were it not for the quick actions of the officer, this could have turned out worse.”
Hamlyn said the $22,000 motorcycle had been stolen, and police would return it to its owner.
A 31-year-old is due to appear at Wellington District Court on August 24 on charges of unlawfully getting on a motorcycle, driving in a dangerous manner, and failing to stop when required.
