Meghan Markle has reportedly been offered a TV role in an upcoming project in Britain, which could explain her sudden return to the UK with husband Prince Harry.

Royal editor Camilla Tominey told Today there are reports the Duchess of Sussex has been offered the opportunity to play herself as a cameo role in an undisclosed project.

“There’s talk of a cameo role playing herself in a new series that may be partly based in the UK,” Tominey revealed.

“There’s also talk just generally about whether she’s landed something bigger.”

Tominey said the whole timing of Harry and Meghan’s return to the UK seems “curious”.

“Parents out there would appreciate that if you’ve got a five-year-old and a seven-year-old, it might be the perfect time to move and enrol them in school because, in the UK at least, that means the children can go into the reception year or indeed prep,” she said.

“But equally, we know that the couple has had a difficult relationship with Great Britain and the fact that they are coming back now and so soon – we think that they’re going to be moving here in a matter of weeks, the kids starting school here in September – it all seems quite sudden.”

Meghan is fresh off her appearance as a guest judge on Masterchef in Australia, and rose to fame in US legal drama Suits for seven seasons from 2011 to 2018, playing paralegal-turned-attorney Rachael Zane.

She famously left the role ahead of her marriage to Prince Harry on May 19, 2018, following her move to the UK.

The newly titled Duke and Duchess of Sussex were initially full-time working royals before announcing their departure from the roles in 2020, citing difficulties coping with royal life.

The pair has spent the past seven years based in Montecito, USA where they have worked on several independent projects, including a Netflix series called Harry & Meghan and a series of tell-all interviews, not to mention Harry’s blockbuster memoir Spare.

Since news broke of the couple’s imminent return to the UK, several theories explaining their return have been floated, including tax issues, visas, as well as the children’s British citizenship.

“Is it just because Harry’s homesick and wants to be closer to his father, as well all know has been very ill in recent months?” Tominey said.

She added the response to the news of Harry and Meghan’s UK return has been a combination of “shock and awe” as the public is “still digesting”.

However, Buckingham Palace has stressed King Charles continues to recover from cancer, Tominey explained.

This week, Queen Camilla spoke out about the difficulty of trying to keep the King’s cancer diagnosis a secret before it was publicly announced in February 2024.

Harry has expressed a desire to reconcile with his family. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet visited King Charles and Queen Camilla at Highgrove House in the UK in July. This was the first time the monarch had seen his grandchildren in four years.

It is understood the royal family has been blindsided by the news of the couple’s imminent return.

There are reports King Charles and Prince William was only informed of the decision this week.
