State Highway 8 has now reopened following the serious early morning crash in which three people suffered critical injuries.

Emergency services were called to the scene, between Lindis Pass-Tarras Road and Birchwood Road, about 7.40am on Saturday.

Hato Hone St John said three patients were transported to Dunedin hospital in a critical condition.

Four ambulances, three ambulances, one first response unit and one PRIME vehicle were sent to the scene.

The section of the Lindis Pass reopened at 3.20pm after being closed in both directions.

Authorities said road users were advised to take extra care when travelling along this route.
