Before the release of Jailer in 2023, the film became embroiled in a title controversy. Director Sakkir Madathil, who was working on a Malayalam film also titled Jailer, objected to the use of the same name by the Rajinikanth-starrer. He claimed the title had been registered with the Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce in 2021 and requested a change for the Tamil film’s Kerala release, leading to a public dispute.
