Police have launched a homicide investigation, named Operation Falconer, and are seeking witnesses to the initial confrontation on Holbrook St or near the bus stop on Blockhouse Bay Rd.
Scene examinations have been carried out at two locations, including where the man was located by ambulance staff.
“I’m asking anyone who was in the area at the time and has information, to come forward,” Bolton said in a statement today.
“If you have dashcam footage, CCTV footage or saw anything – we need to hear from you.”
An interim non-publication order prevents the man’s name and identifying details from being reported. Police said they had been liaising with his family.
“We are in a sensitive phase of our investigation, and we haven’t taken this step lightly, but the community can be reassured that we are working to identify those present and responsible,” Bolton said.
Police are urging anyone with information or relevant footage to call 105 using the reference number 260822/3796.
