Over the past decade, however, that goal has largely gone unmet: numerous attempts by the Los Angeles Conservancy and the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy to agree on a restoration and maintenance plan have met with a lack of cooperation from the property owner. As a result, the Sturges House has been progressively left to its fate, with evident signs of deterioration right on the famous cantilever: parts of the original redwood cladding have deteriorated, while openings in the structure leave the cantilever exposed to further damage. The carport also shows signs of warping and has wooden pillars in a state of disrepair.
The situation has now come to the attention of the authorities: on July 1, 2026, the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety issued the owner a building code violation notice, granting 30 days to bring the property into compliance or submit a plan to resolve the issues.
