Police advised members of the public to use an alternate route.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand said they received a call at 6.43pm about a crash involving six vehicles, and responded with a fire truck and two rescue tenders.
“There was one person trapped,” a Fire and Emergency shift manager said.
“We just used our extrication equipment to release them from the vehicle.
“We’re assisting police and ambulance.”
