A new opportunity for children, teens and adults to explore their creativity and develop their artistic skills is coming to Crown Heights this fall, with professional art classes being offered by local artist Chana Leah Tiechtel.
The idea came from noticing a gap in the after-school options available to children and teens who are drawn to art. While there are many activities for children to choose from, there aren’t always as many opportunities for those who want to develop their artistic abilities in a more structured setting.
“I wanted to create a class that goes beyond the typical,” Tiechtel explained. “Something where students can actually learn different techniques and build their abilities while still having fun.”
Tiechtel, who grew up in Crown Heights, says art has always been something that came naturally to her and developed over the years. She specializes in painting, portraits, illustration and other mediums, and has been teaching art classes and hosting paint nights for different age groups outside the community.
After speaking with parents and receiving requests for classes closer to home, she realized there was a need for quality art classes right here in Crown Heights.
The classes will focus on hands-on instruction, practical techniques and individual attention. Classes will be kept small so students have the opportunity to receive personal guidance while developing their own skills and artistic style.
“I also wanted the classes to be small enough that each student gets individual attention and has the space to develop their own skills,” she said.
Classes will be offered for girls in 3rd through 12th grade, boys in 1st through 6th grade, as well as post-seminary students and adults. An advanced class will also be available for students with previous experience who want to take their artwork to the next level.
For Tiechtel, the goal isn’t only about learning how to draw or paint. She hopes the classes can also provide a chance to step away from the usual routine and spend some time doing something creative.
“I wanted to create a place where people can come after school or work, put everything else aside for a little while, and enjoy a breather,” she said. “Somewhere they can be creative, learn new skills, and just have fun creating without any pressure.”
Registration is now open for the coming year, with limited spots available. Classes will take place after school hours.
