New Lynn Train Station lies between Fruitvale Station and Portage Rd, and passengers reported being stranded on trains nearby.
One passenger said their “packed train” had been stuck on the tracks outside New Lynn for about 30 minutes, with “no air con” and little information about when they would be able to get off.
Another commuter said they saw the train stopped 100m from New Lynn Train Station.
“I felt sorry for the people stuck on the train heading west… we gave up and caught the bus,” they wrote.
Trains were operating only between Waitematā and Grafton, with delays and cancellations expected.
Scheduled buses were accepting rail tickets and passengers were advised to use alternative transport.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand and Hato Hone St John referred inquiries to police as the lead agency.
