A man has been charged with two counts of murder after two people were shot dead in South Auckland last week.
Police said the 30-year-old, who was previously speaking with investigators, was charged this morning over the incident in Wattle Downs on Thursday.
He appeared in Manukau District Court today and was remanded in custody until Wednesday. He was granted interim name suppression.
Emergency services were called to the Gambare Place address at about 1.45pm on Thursday, responding to reports a man was at the property with a handgun and that a woman was injured.
Two people were found dead at the scene.
The response saw armed police sweep through the street and nearby schools locked down.
Police said the following day they had taken someone into custody and had been working to determine if he was involved.
“Police are continuing to investigate the motive behind the killings, and this will include identifying any other persons who may be involved,” Detective Inspector Tofilau Faamanuia Va’aelua said.
“We are pleased to have been able to charge this man in relation to this tragic incident, however the investigation remains ongoing and we are not ruling out any further arrests.
“Police and Victim Support Services are continuing to provide support to the victims’ whānau during this difficult time.”
He said more details would be released “in due course”.
Last week, a resident who says she witnessed the incident told 1News she saw a car pull into the cul-de-sac and a person get out.
Outside the house, a heated argument erupted, followed by a gunshot and then several more.
She said the person returned to the car and drove away before hearing more gunshots at the other end of the road.
