Sensex, Nifty Erase Gains, Turn Flat; Smallcaps Jump 1%, Realty Outperforms | Closing Bell

Indian benchmark indices gave up their early gains and turned flat in Thursday afternoon trade, after staging a strong rally earlier in the session. The Sensex, which had gained more than 350 points, slipped back to 76,571.70, while the Nifty retreated from above the 24,000 mark to trade around 23,913.30.
Despite the lack of momentum in the headline indices, broader markets continued to outperform. The Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 1.15 percent as market breadth remained positive.
Sectorally, realty and media stocks emerged as the top performers, while private sector and PSU banks also traded higher. On the other hand, IT, FMCG and auto stocks remained under pressure.
India VIX declined 3.54 percent, signalling lower volatility even as the benchmarks surrendered their early gains.
