Andrew Garfield has drawn public criticism after he called out billionaires while discussing his new film.

The actor answered audience questions at the Los Angeles screening of “The Uprising,” during which he made a bold comment.

Andrew Garfield’s warning to billionaires drew backlash while promoting his new historical drama

The comment was tied to the subject matter of the film. “The Uprising” is set during the 1381 Peasants’ Revolt in England. The film unfolds in the aftermath of the Black Death. At that time, peasants and commoners reached a breaking point when King Richard II levied heavy taxes on the commoners to fund the Hundred Years’ War.

Garfield essays the role of a fictional lead character. Additionally, Cosmo Jarvis portrays historical rebel leader Wat Tyler.

According to PageSix, the actor appeared alongside director Paul Greengrass and fielded questions from the audience.

An audience member asked him, “What’s your dream takeaway for people in the audience when they go home? What are you hoping for?”

The British-American actor replied, “Well, first I hope they come and see it, first thing,” Garfield responded. “Secondly, I hope it’s galvanizing.”

He added, “And I hope that if any billionaires watch it, they’re scared sh–less.” The comment immediately sparked public outrage, with people pointing out Garfield’s hypocrisy. They noted that his criticism of billionaires did not sit well with his accumulation of wealth.

Former LA mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt said, “You mean…like the billionaires who greenlight your movies and stroke all your multi-million dollar paychecks? Or they good?” Pratt wrote. He added, “Ironically, Garfield just got paid like $5M for playing billionaire Sam Altman in Artificial.”

“Hilarious that world-famous, multi, multi millionaire Andrew Garfield is cosplaying as a put-upon member of the working class,” Substack columnist John William Sherrod posted.

“More billionaires were involved in making this than will probably ever watch it,” Noam Blum, chief technology officer at Tablet Magazine, also posted.

Garfield is a well-known name in the film circuit and has started Spider-Man: No Way Home”, “Hacksaw Ridge,” and “The Amazing Spider-Man.”
