Circus Bar has been a fixture in Wellington’s nightlife scene for many years, offering a welcome respite to towngoers with its inclusive atmosphere, arcade and bar games, PlayStations and unlimited free popcorn from a machine at the bar.
Past and present attendees of the themed bar and nightclub shared their shock and sadness upon hearing of its closure in the comments, with one describing it as “a true, tragic loss for Wellington”.
“NO OMG so many memories and a broken finger,” another wrote.
“This will always be the place I had my first kiss. RIP,” a third said.
The announcement was also shared on Reddit’s Wellington subreddit, where the bar joined the discussion to thank people for their “love and support over the years”, adding it had been “a pleasure and an honour looking after you all”.
One user reminisced about often finishing their night out at Circus “with some popcorn and PS2″, with another noting that “it was the best way to party”.
A third Redditor described the news as “sad”, saying “their free popcorn was such an iconic part of a night out in Welly as a student”.
