He said the offenders fled after neighbours heard the struggle and came to help the woman.
“Unfortunately she sustained wounds to her arm,” Leitch said.
The men ran south along Austin St, and a police dog handler tracked them to Porritt Ave, where the trail was lost near the Ellice St intersection.
“We suspect they had a vehicle parked there and fled in it,” Leitch said.
He said both men were described as muscular and wearing dark hoodies.
One man was about 1.83cm (6ft) tall, while the other was slightly taller.
“One was wearing a face covering, while the other had dark hair and a dark complexion.”
Police are seeking witnesses and relevant footage, including sightings of people on foot in the Austin St and Ellice St areas between 11.30pm and midnight, and of vehicles leaving Ellice St after the alleged assault.
“If anyone can help identify these two men, please get in touch right away.”
