Summerfruit NZ is launching a Cherry Profitability Benchmarking Pilot for Central Otago cherry growers, funded by the Central Otago District Council and delivered by Primary Insights, to identify the key drivers of orchard profitability and give growers data to support business decisions.

The pilot collects production, financial, and operational information across participating orchards and uses that data to develop a benchmarking framework for the industry. Metrics under examination include yield, packout, revenue, labour costs, and orchard profitability across a range of cultivars and production systems.

The project addresses a gap that the industry recognises in its own discussions. Topics such as productivity, labour efficiency, orchard systems and returns come up regularly, but understanding how those factors influence overall profitability is more difficult to pin down. By gathering consistent information across multiple orchards, the pilot aims to clarify the relationship between orchard performance and financial outcomes, and to identify what contributes to strong business performance.

The information generated is intended to serve two purposes. At the individual level, participating growers receive a confidential, personalised benchmarking report comparing their operation against aggregated industry data, giving them insight into key performance indicators relative to the wider participant group. At the industry level, the data is expected to strengthen advocacy on issues affecting grower profitability and help guide future research, development and extension priorities.

All data collected is treated as strictly confidential. Individual business information is not shared, and any industry-level reporting is aggregated and anonymised to protect commercially sensitive material. Summerfruit NZ states that protecting grower confidentiality was a central consideration in the design of the project.

Future opportunities flagged by Summerfruit NZ include expanding the program into other growing regions and building longer-term benchmarking capability across the wider summerfruit industry.

Growers who have already agreed to participate receive acknowledgement from Summerfruit NZ for committing time and information during a busy period of the season. The organisation notes that the success of any benchmarking initiative depends on grower participation and trust, and that the support received so far reflects a shared commitment to improving the industry’s collective understanding of orchard profitability.
