Kim Dotcom’s wife Liz to contest outgoing National MP Chris Penk’s Kaipara ki Mahurangi seat

The Megaupload founder, who has spent more than a decade at the centre of one of New Zealand’s most high-profile legal and political sagas, has also made forays into politics with the ill-fated Internet Party.

Kim Dotcom has been in and out of the headlines in New Zealand since an FBI-backed raid on his Coatesville mansion in 2012. He’s accused of large-scale online piracy and is still fighting extradition by the US.

The minor party founded and bankrolled by the online tycoon made two failed attempts to win seats in Parliament last decade.

Kim Dotcom became known to most Kiwis after a dramatic FBI-backed raid on his Coatesville mansion in 2012, when he was accused of running a criminal enterprise that cost copyright holders hundreds of millions through online piracy.

More than 14 years on, the 52-year-old is still fighting to avoid extradition to the US.

The Dotcoms had been living in Glenorchy near Queenstown for several years, but the Herald reported in July they’d moved back to Auckland and were leasing a $9m-plus home near Ōmaha Beach.

She was determined to reform Government accountability after seeing the “systemic injustice and institutional overreach” in the treatment of her husband, says Freedom Party candidate Liz Dotcom. The Kaipara ki Mahurangi candidate is married to internet mogul Kim Dotcom.

Admitted to the bar as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court, Dotcom would bring an analytical approach to political advocacy, said a media release announcing her candidacy today.

“Her dual background in law and business provides her with a deep understanding of the institutional systems, regulatory frameworks, and economic forces that directly impact everyday families across New Zealand.”

Her push for direct democracy was “driven by personal experience”, according to the media release.

“After witnessing firsthand what she describes as systemic injustice and institutional overreach in the high-profile treatment of her husband, she became determined to reform government accountability.”

She wanted a future where families could “thrive under a system that works for the people, not around them”, Dotcom said.

“Real change happens when citizens, not central authorities, hold the ultimate authority over their communities and their future.”
