A parking deck is getting a facelift in downtown Winston-Salem, thanks to two North Carolina-based artists. Officials say it is a celebration of “the past, present, and future of Winston-Salem.”

The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Public Art Commission announced on Monday that the 6th Street and North Cherry Street sides of the 6th-Cherry-Trade Parking Deck will get a large-scale mural. During the installation, the 6th Street entrances to the public parking deck will be closed.

Gabriel Eng-Goetz, from Durham, and Taylor White, from Raleigh, were chosen from a competitive artist call that received over 200 applicants from across the United States. Officials said they were selected in part by online community voting and in-person voting last February during the Trade Street Farmers Market.

“This project is a great example of how public art can help revitalize our city,” said Erica Palmiter, Public Art Project Planner. “With this monumental mural, we hope to have an often-overlooked city building become a vibrant gateway to the Arts District.”

The artwork within the mural will include vibrant-colored birds in flight, which will serve as a symbol of Winston-Salem’s growth in new residents and artists. The mural’s design utilizes patterns inspired by local textile traditions, which are an homage to the city’s artistic heritage.

Officials said the project will run through October 9, weather permitting.
