Bolton said it is not believed there is any risk to the wider public.
“Police recognise the impact an incident of this nature has on the community, and we want to reassure residents that support is being provided to the family of the deceased and those in the wider community.
“Staff will also be conducting reassurance patrols in the coming days,” Bolton said.
A neighbour told Stuff that one resident had confronted another resident and had left the scene with stab wounds.
“[He] left that place with stab wounds and bleeding all the way down until he got to his footpath at his mum’s house,” they told Stuff.
A local resident said he had returned from taking his wife to an appointment when he found the road blocked.
“I wondered what was going on,” he said.
He said recent violence in the area, including a stabbing on Fenchurch St, had left residents concerned.
“This kind of thing really rocks the neighbourhood.”
In December, two people were stabbed, one fatally, in separate bus attacks. A man has pleaded not guilty and is due to stand trial next year.
