Q: I’m 60 and recently retired. I’m about to come into about $200,000, which I’d like to put into super, where I have $800,000. My husband still works and has a larger super balance. When I was employed, it seemed a priority to make concessional (pre-tax) contributions to help reduce my taxable income. Now that I’m retired, should I just make a non-concessional (after-tax) contribution up to the cap before June 30 next year and then the remainder after July 1 and not bother with a concessional contribution? What are the rules on adding to my super, both on caps and age limits? – Tian
A: As you’re retired, it’s not worth making a voluntary concessional contribution that you can claim a tax deduction for unless your income is above $45,000.
