Connor Campbell claims seventh straight New Zealand amateur boxing title

  • October 7, 2026

His third accolade was the Jameson Belt and his coach, Powell Marshall, won the Joe Thwaites Shield.

Campbell said he was happy with the wins.

“It feels surreal thinking that I’ve achieved seven consecutive national titles being only 18.”

He also competed at the Commonwealth Games in July and August.

“This year has been a huge year and to top it off with this was a fantastic result, and it’s given me more drive to now continue working towards my goal of qualifying for the 2028 Olympics.”

Campbell said that was his main focus, not turning professional.

“[I’m] not too fussed on pros. [I’ve] got heaps of time.”

Meanwhile, fellow Commonwealth Games participant Greer Hall, of Hamilton’s Hit Fitness HQ, won her third New Zealand National Amateur Championship gold.

She defeated Ava Newman in the final.

Saskia Elliott, of Putāruru’s Ace Fighters, also won gold after being unopposed.

Hamilton’s Nabby’s Boxing Gym had three champions this year: Lennon Bevins in the cadet – 48kg division, Tangaroa Lee Holman in the junior – 70kg division, and Asma Nabizadeh in the junior – 66kg division.

Macy Smith, of Cambridge, won her first gold in the lightweight division after defeating Christchurch’s Jaime Gibbons, whom she has fought several times previously.

It was Smith’s second attempt at the national championship title.

The focus of many boxers will now shift to the next Olympic Games.

World Boxing has said there are 248 places available at the 2028 event in Los Angeles.

“[This] will be the first Olympic Games in history to feature gender parity in the boxing competition with seven weight classes each for men and women that will be contested by 124 males and 124 females.”

The Oceanic Qualifier is provisionally scheduled to take place in Samoa in October next year and only the gold medallists of this tournament will qualify for the Olympics.

“Second-chance qualifiers” will take place in Italy in March 2028, followed by “last-chance qualifiers” in Hungary.
