Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) said the highway was now closed between Orari Station Rd and Wincester-Geraldine Rd.
A detour is in place, with southbound traffic directed via Orari Station Rd, Coach Rd and Winchester-Geraldine Rd. Northbound motorists should follow the same route in reverse.
“The Police Serious Crash Unit will be attending and their investigations can take several hours.”
Fire and Emergency New Zealand said three crews from Geraldine responded. A shift manager directed further questions to police.
Motorists were asked to delay travel plans if possible.
Hato Hone St John said two patients were taken to Timaru Hospital, one in a moderate condition and the other in a minor condition.
