Rotorua’s Robin Goomes has once again made history at an extreme mountain biking event in the United States.

She becomes the first rider to win the Red Bull Rampage title three times in a row and the first woman to land a flat spin 360 at the event, earning her a final run score of 93.50 points.

As well as the flat spin 360, her second run also included a backflip off a massive step-down and a backflip cancan near the bottom.

Second place went to American Hannah Bergemann, who was just 0.75 points behind Goomes, with Canadian Kirsten Van Horne in third.

Organisers said this year’s competition, held in Southern Utah, was the steepest and longest venue of any previous contest site, with 200 metres of vertical descent across 90 acres (36 hectares) of dry sandstone dirt terrain.

Goomes also made history in 2024, when the then-24-year-old won the first women’s edition of the event.

Speaking after her latest win, she revealed she’d built a training compound at home in New Zealand to perfect a backflip step-down – instead, she pulled the flat spin 360.

“Winning once was something I never thought I could accomplish, so winning this third title is a dream. The pressure seems to just keep building. All I knew this year is that if I wanted to do it again, I’d have to push harder than I’ve ever done and be better than I have been previously. So that was the goal coming in – just work hard for it,” she said.

“I’m stoked to take this trophy back to New Zealand. It’s been hasn’t been easy. I worked really hard for it, and I wanted it more than ever.”

Before her Rampage career, Goomes grew up on the Chatham Islands and was later based in Antarctica during a stint in the army. She previously competed in Red Bull Formation in 2022.

Fellow Kiwi Vinny Armstrong took fourth place, scoring 82.75 on both her first and second runs.

The Red Bull Rampage requires competitors to ride down the mountain in one piece. Each athlete gets two runs, with their highest score counted.

Riders aren’t racing against the clock, but instead compete with the rugged terrain – the mountain doesn’t have a natural route down, so athletes spend about a week before the event digging and shaping their lines and jumps. Each is allowed a team of two people to help them dig, but power tools and external material aren’t allowed.

Competitors generally spend about three days digging, followed by four days of testing and refining their route.
