Hughes set a session-best 2:05.5864s on the last of 22 laps in the 60-minute co-driver session.
James Golding’s co-driver Richie Stanaway had been the pace-setter until Hughes’ effort.
Stanaway eventually slipped to third after Blanchard Racing Team stablemate Zak Best, partnered with Aaron Cameron, also improved late to second.
Grove Racing’s Tim Slade and PremiAir Racing driver David Russell were fourth and fifth respectively.
After Ryan Wood’s sizable shunt in Practice 3, his co-driver Jaxon Evans spent the opening minutes of Practice 5 in and out of the pit lane.s
Evans reported no complaints in the opening stanza.
“I’m all good. Obviously yesterday was one of those days, more mental than anything that you need to recover from,” said Wood.
“Just a massive credit to our team. Jaxon has rolled out there and has no complaints. Really proud of our group. We’ll just bounce back from what happened yesterday hopefully on Sunday.
Wood said he was “A little tender, but I’ll be all right.”
Evans ended the session in 10th while the sister car of Fabian Coulthard was only 20th.
Coulthard complained of balance issues, lamenting a set-up change to overcome its apparent lack of straight-line speed.
Brad Jones Racing completed an overnight engine change for the Andre Heimgartner/Bryce Fullwood-driven Toyota Supra. It was up on its stands mid-session due to an electrical issue.
Practice 6 at the Bathurst 1000 gets underway at 1:10pm AEDT.
