Double yellow flags were waved after ducks made their way onto the track during Practice 6 of the Bathurst 1000.
Courtney’s Team 18 Camaro slammed the back of Winterbottom’s Tickford Mustang when the latter slowed for a yellow flag halfway down Conrod Straight.
The yellow had been called due to the presence of ducks on the circuit, which subsequently resulted in a red flag.
Both cars were driven back to the pits for repairs, with their bemused co-drivers left to explain the scenario.
“How funny, the two commentary blokes crashing into each other,” Winterbottom dead-panned.
“Obviously double waved yellow, I backed off there and he’s hit me full noise.
“It’s done a fair bit of damage. You’re not sure if a kangaroo is going to jump out, there’s limited comms…
“He hit me hard so we’ve both got damage.”
The television broadcast replayed a communication to Courtney wanting him that a yellow had been called for “animals”.
“It was strange,” Courtney said.
“We just started going so I got up it, Mark and I are going, and then all of a sudden he jumped on the brake halfway down the straight.
“It was either the wall or the back of him. It’s something I wasn’t anticipating to happen, so pretty surprising.”
