The Devils Henchmen Motorcycle Club was founded in Christchurch in 1973 and became one of New Zealand’s original outlaw motorcycle gangs.
The Herald reported in 2024 that the Devils Henchmen appeared to be making a comeback in Christchurch, although police believed its membership remained small.
The killings happened at Guthrey Courts, a social housing complex owned by Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust.
A neighbour told the Herald she heard “a lot of screaming” followed by sirens and the arrival of armed police.
“[There was] a lot of chaos … I just heard a lot of screaming … then we heard heaps of different sirens and saw armed offenders [squad members] turn up.”
She said several surrounding streets were blocked off and residents were told to remain inside their homes.
The woman described the complex as generally quiet, although parts of the street could get “rowdy and busy” at times.
“It’s just a bit concerning how something like that can happen so close to home,” she said.
