Brodie Kostecki and Todd Hazelwood have won the Bathurst 1000, after race leader Anton De Pasquale ran out of fuel on the last lap.
The Dick Johnson Racing team appeared to have thrown the race away after a slow stop dropped the number 17 car from first to fifth.
But a late safety car, the only one of the race, set up a three-lap sprint to the finish.
De Pasquale (18) and teammate Will Davidson were leading on the final lap before his car ran out of fuel.
Speaking after his victory, Kostecki was thrilled with the result.
“We executed so well up until that second-last pit stop with the brake change.
“But, like I’ve always said, the mountain chooses the winner.
“We definitely had the fastest car today – so super proud of everyone – this Ford Mustang was on rails.”
Asked about his emotions in the crucial final moments, Hazelwood said he swung “between the lowest to the extreme highs, all in about 40 seconds”.
“We were begging for a safety car – this guy [Kostecki] was absolutely sending it.
“A massive shout-out to the whole crew; what a phenomenal job they’ve done all week.”
