Almost five decades of art, design and watercolour are coming together in Valletta as Maltese artist Doranne Alden Caruana prepares to unveil a retrospective exhibition celebrating her creative journey.
Titled FULL CIRCLE — From Design to Light, the exhibition will open at St. John Ambulance & Rescue in Valletta on Friday 16th October, before running until 31st October.
Officially opened by Dr Michael Frendo, the exhibition traces Doranne’s evolution from her early focus on colour and composition to her more recent fascination with light, atmosphere and capturing a particular “moment in time”.
Doranne began studying art at around 14 years old at the Msida Polytechnic before entering professional graphic design in 1982.
During the 1980s, she worked with JPA and designed Circle Magazine from cover to cover for its first five years. She later established Details Design Ltd in 1990.
But throughout her design career and family life, one artistic passion remained constant.
“I have always been a watercolourist,” Doranne said.
The exhibition features recent paintings depicting Malta and Gozo, people, architecture and landscapes, alongside a retrospective section containing earlier and more personal pieces, including works connected to her family and the years she spent painting alongside her father.
Over her career, Doranne has participated in more than 55 collective exhibitions, as well as numerous joint and solo exhibitions, with her work appearing in publications both locally and internationally.
Today, painting and teaching remain at the heart of her artistic practice.
FULL CIRCLE — From Design to Light runs from 17th to 31st October at St. John Ambulance & Rescue in Valletta, following its opening on 16th October at 7.30pm.
