“I thought, well, I know a small amount of first aid, so I can get over there and see what I can do.

Uffindell said shortly after he pulled over, the Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service chairman Brent Warner was also driving by.
“Brent’s a great guy and obviously highly trained in looking after people.”
Uffindell said he has first aid training and became a lifeguard recently, but was vastly less experienced than Warner.
“It was great to have him there, and he knew all the right questions to ask and to check on her and make sure that she was okay,” he said.
Uffindell said they found the woman’s phone, which they later used to contact her loved ones.
He confirmed she was in safe hands with ambulance crews.
“Kiwis are a caring bunch, so yeah, everyone did what they could.”

A witness passing through traffic at the time said he saw a DX courier motorcycle driver on the ground after the accident.
“I just saw police beside him and there was a local MP, I think it was Sam Uffindell’s car on the side of the road and another black car.
“There was a bit of a traffic jam because of it,” the witness said.
Police said they were alerted to the single-vehicle crash on Te Awanui Drive, Tauranga, about 3.10pm today.
Hato Hone St John said they were on scene after being notified at 3.07pm.
