In a moment that is straight out of a Disney movie, several butterflies descended upon a turtle’s head, fluttering their wings and seemingly forming a “Disney princess” crown.
This TikTok video has people guessing what might be going on here, with many proclaiming this turtle a real-life Disney princess, while others offer up some darker and more disconcerting ideas about what’s really happening in this clip.
In this video, we count half a dozen butterflies landing on and circling around this turtle’s head as this turtle looks around. Why are these butterflies doing this?
Nothing in the video gives any indication as to why these butterflies are doing this, but people in this video’s comment section did offer up their answers as to what was really going on here.
Some social media viewers were of the opinion that these butterflies liked the turtle and were simply being affectionate: “They are giving butterfly kisses. So cute.”
Other reviewers offered a more sinister take on this otherwise heartwarming moment: “They are eating him, by the way.”
Some viewers had a more elaborate take on this, which might prove to be the correct assessment of this situation: “They appear to be mud-puddling: drinking moisture from the turtle’s shell/skin and possibly taking up salts and minerals. Butterflies commonly do this on damp surfaces, mud, sweat, tears, or animal secretions.”

Why Do Butterflies Land on Animals?
While it’s most common to see butterflies in a garden or fluttering above flowers, they do sometimes land on people or other animals.
This is because butterflies don’t just feed on flower nectar; they also eat other substances, such as salt. It’s not uncommon for butterflies to land on people because they are drawn to the salt in someone’s sweat.
While turtles do not have sweat glands like humans, when they come out of or go near the water, they will have moisture on them containing minerals that butterflies like to eat.
It’s also worth noting that turtles’ eyes produce tears with sodium, and since the butterflies appear to be gathered around this turtle’s eyes, it’s possible that they are trying to absorb the sodium from their tears.
This is all perfectly normal behavior for butterflies, and it helps them absorb the necessary nutrients for a healthy and complete diet.
