Hot roast chickens have long been a supermarket staple in Australia, with the nickname “Bachelor’s Handbag” becoming so embedded in the country’s vernacular that it was voted the Macquarie Dictionary People’s Choice Word of the Year in 2022.
Before the launch, Woolworths general manager of bags Rhonda Ma said Australians had affectionately talked about the “Bachelor’s Handbag” for years.
“We decided it was finally time to make the moniker literal. It’s the ultimate novelty accessory for super fans of the hot roast chook,” Ma said.
Woolworths said it sells about 20 million roast chickens each year across Australia.
Despite the hype across the Tasman, New Zealand shoppers hoping to get their hands on one are likely to be disappointed.
A Woolworths New Zealand spokesperson told the Herald the bag was only made for the Australian market.
“The Bachelor’s Handbag promotion is currently running only in Australia and isn’t available in our New Zealand stores.
“We know how iconic the humble hot roast chicken is for Kiwi weeknight dinners. While there are no immediate plans to bring the bag across the Ditch, who knows what the future might bring.”
