One person has died after a house fire in Dunedin, police have confirmed.

Emergency services were called to the property in Loyalty St, in the suburb of Forbury, about 11am on Friday.

In a statement tonight, Senior Sergeant Hayden Smale said a body had been discovered inside the address.

Officers would remain at the property overnight and a scene examination would take place on Saturday.

Police have advised the public to avoid the area.

Earlier on Friday, officers were seen consoling two young people amid emotional scenes at the house.

A large police presence was visible alongside firefighters.

Two young people on the street were being consoled by police when a third woman ran up. She was led over to police by a firefighter.

The group were emotional as all three were driven away in a police car.

A neighbour said they were told there had been a fire that had started in a laundry.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said they were called to the blaze just after 11am.

Four crews from across Dunedin attended.

“When we arrived there was a small fire on the premises,” the spokesman said.

Hato Hone St John said it was notified at 11.18am of a fire incident in Forbury.

One ambulance and one rapid response unit attended the scene.
