The singer said the combination of loud music, stage lighting, stress and the energy of a live audience meant doctors did not believe returning to the stage was advisable at this stage, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
“There’s a lot going on when you’re onstage,” Joel said. “They said, ‘Well, you really shouldn’t be doing that right now.’”
Despite the restrictions, Joel said he hopes further medical assessments will allow him to perform again.

The health challenges have also led him to scale back another long-time passion. Joel told the publication he is auctioning more than 70 motorcycles from his collection after deciding it was no longer safe to ride.
The musician said he had owned more than 100 motorcycles over the years but recognised he was no longer able to use them as he once did. He said his NPH diagnosis made driving “a little bit iffy” and prompted him to hand the bikes on to new owners.
The singer revealed his diagnosis in May 2025 when he cancelled touring. The announcement came after he had postponed several performances and had a fall during a concert in Connecticut.
Last month, Joel disclosed that he had undergone brain surgery as part of his treatment. Speaking on SiriusXM’s The Billy Joel Channel, he said surgeons implanted a shunt designed to improve the drainage of fluid from his brain.
Joel said the procedure had improved his memory, balance and overall abilities. He also said he continues to attend physical therapy and closely follow medical advice as he recovers.
“I’m not going anywhere,” Joel said. “I’m here. I’m still here.”
