Scoular said the event would also provide inspiration for young local dancers.
“We have a passionate local dance community here and this is a huge opportunity for our rangatahi to be inspired by the talent of these incredible dancers from across the world.
“It’s also our chance to show our manaakitanga and give our international visitors a warm Tauranga welcome.”
The competing crews will receive an official welcome to the city through an opening ceremony and pōhiri led by Ngā Pōtiki and Te Wharekura o Mauao.
Event director Gemma Laing said Tauranga was chosen because it offered international visitors accessibility and a strong New Zealand experience.
“We wanted a destination. Somewhere that showcases New Zealand for the beautiful country it is and somewhere that was accessible to Auckland for those flying in internationally.”
Laing has overseen New Zealand’s involvement with Hip Hop Unite since 2012 and serves on the organisation’s international technical committee. She has also managed Team New Zealand at multiple world championships.
She said hosting the event on home soil would be a memorable opportunity for Kiwi competitors.
“Hosting the Hip Hop Unite World Championships here is something incredibly special. To give our Kiwi crews the rare opportunity to compete on the world stage in front of their families and supporters is a moment we are incredibly proud of.”
The championships bring together elite crews that have qualified through national competitions held around the globe. Countries including the Czech Republic, South Africa and Portugal have already confirmed attendance, with dancers, choreographers, judges and supporters all travelling to Tauranga.
Competitors will battle across a range of divisions, including mini, junior, adult and mega crews, alongside duo events and dance battles.
Laing said audiences could expect an unforgettable spectacle.
“The energy, athleticism, creativity and extraordinary talent these dancers bring to the stage is unlike anything else. These are some of the best hip hop dancers in the world, and the power, precision and passion of their performances make for an unforgettable live experience.”
The Hip Hop Unite World Championships is supported by the Tauranga Event Fund, which helps attract events that align with the city’s strengths and contribute to a vibrant calendar of activities throughout the year.
Single-day and full-weekend passes are now available, with ticket and event information available through What’s On Tauranga.
