Victoria band sweeps curling culture into new rock song

A Victoria rock band has turned the language of curling into a rock and roll anthem, with a little help from one of the sport’s most recognizable voices.

Three Sailing Wait released “Hurry Hard!” in early October, bringing a song years in the making to streaming platforms before performing it at the Après Curl Party on Oct. 17.

The performance took place at the Victoria Curling Club (VCC), where fans gathered after the day’s action at the Grand Slam of Curling (GSOC) invitational across the street at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.

Andrew Komlodi, a bassist and vocalist with the band, recalled looking out the window at the VCC after Friday’s draw ended and seeing a lineup of spectators waiting to get inside.

“There was a lineup of probably 60 or 70 people out the door,” Komlodi said. “It was definitely the place to be, and it got us pretty fired up.”

“Hurry Hard!” is a tribute to curlers and fans, featuring a special cameo from Colleen Jones. The Canadian curling legend serves as a sportscaster in the song, recording her commentary before her death in November following a battle with cancer.

The track is among the earliest pieces of material the band wrote together after getting their start at the VCC. Cam, also a vocalist and bassist with the band, was introduced to the sport by Komlodi, who invited him to a bonspiel.

“I fell in love with the sport and with the community,” Butt said. “The culture of curling, the traditions, sharing a pitcher with your opponents afterwards.”

Cam started keeping a list of curling terminology he heard during televised games, which eventually helped shape the track into a straightforward 12-bar rock song.

It even inspired its own dance move during early performances at the club.

“People would be running back to their tables to get their brooms and sweep the dance floor,” Komlodi said. “Once we saw that sweeping dance emerge, we knew that we had something kind of special.”

When it came to recording, the band wanted a broadcaster to set up the fictional game. Komlodi reached out to Jones’ son, Luke, whom he had previously curled with in Nova Scotia.

Jones was the perfect fit.

A six-time Canadian women’s champion, she won world titles in 2001 and 2004 and made 21 appearances at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. She also skipped Canada to the world senior women’s championship in 2017 and was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2016.

The band incorporated phrases from Jones’ commentary during her first Scotties Tournament of Hearts victory, creating a subtle nod to her championship career.

Komlodi said the band did not know Jones was seriously ill when she agreed to record her lines. After her death, the members were unsure when to release the track.

The opportunity to perform during the Grand Slam event eventually felt like the right time to share it as a tribute.

“Enough time had passed that it didn’t feel so raw to put it out,” Komlodi said. “It felt like more of an appropriate tribute to one of the greats.”

During the Oct. 17 performance, Victoria skip Taylor Reese-Hansen joined the band on stage to read Jones’ part.

The band also made a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society in connection with the release and encourages listeners to contribute to CCS.

Three Sailing Wait is now working on a full-length album slated for spring 2027.
