Minimalist timber windows from luxury brand Carminati’s Skyline Minimal Frames collection were chosen to frame views from the Bvlgari Hotel and Resort in Dubai.

Designed to make the “least possible visual impact”, Carminati‘s Skyline Minimal Frames range includes both windows and doors defined by minimal profiles, natural materials and modern, patented technology.

The frame’s slimness is the result of Carminati’s patented Skyline Minimal Frames construction, where the timber sash is structurally bonded to the glass pane, which reinforces the whole frame.

“With a front-facing profile of just 37 millimetres for lift-and-slide systems and 50 millimetres for all other opening types, Skyline Minimal Frames combines outstanding thermal and acoustic performance with a minimal visual impact, making it the world’s slimmest wooden profile,” said Carminati.

The collection was selected by Milan-based studio ACPV Architects to be integrated into their design for the Bvlgari Hotel and Resort, which reached completion on Dubai’s Jumeirah Bay Island in 2017.

“Our Skyline Minimal Frames range, personally selected by the architects, possesses all the characteristics required for the project,” Carminati said. “The frames provide the perfect setting for enjoying a breathtaking panorama while feeling at the centre of Dubai’s vibrant social life and exclusive luxury.”

“The new resort is the result of refined Bvlgari style, professionalism and taste of its design team,” the brand added.

Carminati’s Skyline Minimal Frames collection offers a range of windows and door products, including Skyline Sliding, Skyline Bifold, Skyline Pivot, Skyline Drive, Skyline NoForce and the Skyline Handle.

Each of the collection’s products is available in a range of styles, from Skyline Modern to Skyline Classic, which can be manufactured entirely from wood or paired with an external aluminium cladding.

For the 158,000-square-metre Bvlgari hotel, ACPV Architects opted for Carminati’s Skyline Sliding lift-and-slide system – combining its sleek 37-millimetre profile with pale oak on the inside and a bronze-coloured aluminium cladding on the outside, chosen for its resistance to coastal environments.

This offered expansive views throughout the hotel, intended to create “continuity between the indoors and outdoors”, along with access to adjacent terraces.

“Large lift-and-slide doors connect the living rooms with expansive shaded terraces, while full-height glazing gives guests the feeling of being outdoors, conveying a sense of luxury associated with greenery, privacy and the tranquillity of the interior,” Carminati said.

The Skyline Sliding system operates through a lift-and-slide mechanism and is available in configurations with two sliding leaves – one fixed and one sliding – among other combinations.

Integrated into the product is the brand’s patented bottom track, designed exclusively for the Skyline Minimal Frames collection.

Its carriages are set entirely into the floor and covered by a flexible belt, which protects the mechanism from dust and allows for “maximum sliding smoothness”.

Bvlgari Hotel and Resort A bespoke product was created for the Bvlgari Hotel and Resort in Dubai

According to Carminati, the large-scale commission for the Bvlgari hotel involved the development of a bespoke product to meet the project’s specific technical requirements and local building regulations.

With glazed panels reaching up to four metres in height and subject to significant wind loads, the project required a bespoke system: a concealed steel structure between the lift-and-slide doors and the fixed transoms above.

Built around a composite beam, with three welded steel tubes set within the cavity between the frames, it allowed the profiles to stay slim while meeting the structural requirements.

“The structure takes on the challenges of the environment and combines its contrasts in an original and sophisticated solution,” Carminati said.

Carminati was founded in 1894 near Bergamo, Italy, and is still run by the founding family.

The company specialises in architectural timber windows and doors, holds patents on its Skyline Minimal Frames system, and develops bespoke solutions for each project through its in-house technical office.
