Jack Reacher has been wandering across America for nearly three decades, but the man who created him has finally decided to stop following him quite so closely. Lee Child introduced the former military policeman in 1997’s Killing Floor, launching one of the most successful thriller franchises in publishing history. Now, with the release of Chain Reaction, the author has confirmed that he’s stepped away from writing the novels, leaving his younger brother, Andrew Child, firmly in charge of Reacher‘s literary future.

Speaking exclusively with Collider, Lee Child revealed that his involvement in the writing process has essentially concluded at this point. Although his name remains attached to the series, Andrew now writes the novels independently, with Lee admitting that he doesn’t even see the manuscripts until they’re delivered to the publisher. For somebody who spent decades deciding where Reacher would go next, it’s a remarkable arrangement. He told Collider:

“He’s very secret, and I think that’s fair enough. When I was doing it, I hated showing anybody anything, and I generally wouldn’t, because the style that I had and that Andrew’s continued is completely improvised. There’s no plan, there’s no long-term view. You can’t say, ‘This is what it’s going to be.’ We don’t know. It’ll be what it is, and until it’s finished, I don’t really know what it is or what it’s about. I don’t like to show anybody, and he’s the same. So I just get it when the publisher gets it, and I read it out of interest.”

After initially collaborating with Andrew on The Sentinel in 2020, Lee gradually handed over more responsibility across the subsequent novels and now, with Chain Reaction, Andrew has now taken on the bulk of the writing responsibility for writing Reacher’s adventures. Transition plan complete.

Lee Child Says Giving Jack Reacher Away Was Always the Point

The most interesting thing is that Lee considers this a totally normal thing to do, and wants the world to enjoy Reacher, even those writing their own unofficial stories. After all, Reacher has already lived several different lives beyond the page, having been portrayed by Tom Cruise in two feature films and Alan Ritchson in Prime Video‘s Reacher. Child feels that allowing another writer to take the character forward isn’t fundamentally different from watching somebody else interpret him on screen. He explained:

“People think that’s weird, that I’ve given away this character, but the entire point of writing is to give away the character. You want the reader, first of all, to own it, and for the character to live as a reality in the reader’s mind. That’s the whole point. You want to give it away, and then you give it away to movies or television or whatever. It’s no different giving it away to a different author. Same thing exactly, because there’s a lot of fan fiction around. People writing Reacher-style fan fiction, and that’s fine too. Let them have it. Let them enjoy it.”

Of course, that doesn’t mean Lee has nothing to do with Reacher anymore — after all, he did this interview! He also remains closely associated with the novels and the television adaptations and continues to discuss the character’s future, while his name remains attached to the books he helped establish. His departure is specifically from the process of writing new Reacher novels, rather than the wider franchise. The brothers also still discuss the character and his world, and how Reacher sees things, with Lee remaining a sounding board for Andrew even if he no longer participates in the day-to-day writing process. Lee also remains fully involved with the television side of the franchise, which has become an enormous success for Prime Video.

Chain Reaction is available now. Lee Child was speaking exclusively to Collider in support of Chain Reaction, the latest Jack Reacher novel. Child will also co-write Zero Margin, the first Frances Neagley novel, with Yasmin Angoe, arriving in spring 2027. Explore the Reacher novels and more with a free trial of Audible.
