Award-winning writer G. Willow Wilson will be returning to Captain Marvel in 2027, and the new run is already shaping up to be an exciting one. Marvel has unveiled new ways Carol Danvers will be challenged by massive threats following the events of Avengers: Armageddon.

Marvel Comics’ Editor-in-Chief Stephen Wacker announced the new ongoing Captain Marvel series at New York Comic Con’s Bullpen Bulletins panel on October 9. Set to launch in May 2027, the Captain Marvel run will be helmed by Ms. Marvel’s own G. Willow Wilson with art by Fantastic Four’s Rachael Stott. It will spin out of the upcoming Avengers flagship title, which is set to launch its first issue on November 4 by Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto.

Marvel Teases a ‘Rule-Breaking’ Run in New Captain Marvel Series

The new Captain Marvel series spins out of the “cataclysmic” events of Avengers: Armageddon, also by Zdarsky, which dropped its fifth issue earlier this month. Marvel unveiled a new teaser image of Carl by Stott to promote the series, with her looking effortlessly chic with the words “Back to Work” emblazoned on the poster.

“Carol Danvers finds herself grounded like never before,” Marvel’s teaser for Captain Marvel #1 reads. “To rise again, Carol will have to challenge everything she thought she knew about being Captain Marvel — and break every rule along the way. And as she pushes herself further, a threat that has been quietly assembling in the shadows of the Marvel Universe for decades is finally ready to make its move.”

It remains to be seen if the looming threat that’s waiting for Captain Marvel is a familiar one or a brand-new foe, but one thing is clear: with Wilson at the helm, it is primed to be a groundbreaking run for the character. Wilson previously wrote the Captain Marvel run that introduced Kamala Khan as well as 2014’s Ms. Marvel, so she’s got plenty of experience with the character’s mythos.

“I’m so excited to be returning to these characters who I love so much, these readers who I love so much, and to be taking Carol on her next big adventure,” Wilson shared in a video message at the con. “I can’t wait to get started and for fans to see what we have in store for Carol and all her friends. So chin up, put your boots on. We’re going back up!”

There’s more for Captain Marvel fans to look forward to as Carol returns for her next solo series. “So unbelievably thrilled to not only be working with one of my favorite writers, the amazing G. Willow Wilson, but also one of my absolute favorite characters,” Stott added of the new series. “At times like these, as an artist, you really have to pinch yourself, and assume that in a previous life you saved a busload of orphans from an escaped tiger to get so lucky. Can’t wait to help bring this exciting new chapter of Carol’s story to life!”

Captain Marvel is Officially Joining the New Avengers Team in November

While the new Captain Marvel run may not be launching until May 2027, fans of Carol Danvers don’t have to wait much longer to reconnect with the character in a starring role. She is set to be a key part of Marvel’s new Avengers team, with the new ongoing title launching next month for a series the publisher has dubbed a “trailblazing new era.”

This new era is teasing plenty of superheroics and surprises to come. “With the world order completely rewritten after AVENGERS: ARMAGEDDON, there comes a day, a day unlike any other, when a new group of Earth’s mightiest heroes finds themselves united to avenge the Marvel Universe: Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain Marvel, Daredevil, Luke Cage and [REDACTED]!” Marvel teased, hinting that there are plenty of surprises in store as the Avengers will once again take center stage.

Captain Marvel #1 launches in May 2027, with an exact date to be announced closer to publication.
