Social media users criticised actor Krishna Prabha for her remarks about mental health. In a recent interview, Krishna Prabha said that depression and other mental health issues affect people who are jobless. The issue gained traction after actor Saniya Iyappan shared a video of a psychologist criticising Krishna Prabha’s comments on her Instagram story.

In the interview, Krishna Prabha claimed that in the olden days, people simply called such problems “craziness,” but now they have fancy names like depression and mood swings. She and the anchor laughed while making these remarks. A psychologist later released a video condemning Krishna Prabha’s insensitive statements, which Saniya shared on her Instagram, drawing wider attention.

Social media users slammed Krishna Prabha for making immature and unfortunate remarks, especially at a time when society is becoming more aware of mental health. “We often hear people say that they overthink and have depression. There are many such new words like mood swings. But, we jokingly say that it is just craziness which is now called depression. Do you know why people are complaining about such things? Because they are jobless and nothing else,” Krishna Prabha said in the interview.

In the video shared by Saniya Iyappan, a psychologist addressed the issue. “It is a common misconception that you have depression, mood swings or anxiety because you feel lazy, do not do anything or have a lot of free time. But I would like to clarify that mental health problems are not caused by such things. They could be due to financial problems, career-related stress, family issues, or even organic or genetic reasons. If you don’t know about something, then try to learn or educate yourself. These are not issues that should be laughed away.

“You can laugh at it when it happens to someone else, but you would understand the gravity of it only when you go through it. So, before talking about mental health issues, try to understand them. Do not push people who are already struggling further into distress,” the psychologist said, referring to Krishna Prabha’s remarks.
