We round up everything coming to streaming services this week, including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+, ThreeNow, Neon and TVNZ+.
The Iris Affair (TVNZ+, October 16)
From Luther creator Neil Cross comes The Iris Affair, a deadly, sun-soaked game of hide and seek. Set against the pearly-white beaches of Sardinia and the cypress trees of Tuscany, this “unapologetically exciting” series sees code-cracker Iris Nixon (Niamh Algar) face off against Cameron Beck (Tom Hollander), a charismatic, Musk-like entrepreneur. He needs her expertise to unlock a top secret piece of technology, but when its reality-bending power is revealed, Nixon vanishes with the key. Described by Algar as an amalgamation of Good Will Hunting, Talented Mr Ripley and The Bourne Ultimatum, this taut techno-thriller is sure to keep you on tenterhooks.
27 Nights (Netflix, October 17)
Recently premiering at the San Sebastián Film Festival and based on the non-fiction book of the same name, 27 Nights follows Martha Hoffman (Marilú Marini), an affluent widow whose daughters commit her to a mental institution against her will. Spikily addressing elder abuse and the familial politics of wealth, this deceptive dramedy “cleverly side-steps” and subverts the clichés of octogenarian-focused fare like The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Finding Your Feet. Young or old, you’d be hard-pressed not to watch 27 Nights without shedding a tear or two.
The Place Beyond the Pines (TVNZ+, October 14)
With Derek Cianfrance’s Roofman arriving in theatres this week, now’s a good time to revisit The Place Beyond the Pines. Cianfrance’s third feature, which critics said “touches greatness”, stars Ryan Gosling as Luke Glanton, a motorcycle stunt rider turned bank robber, and Bradley Cooper as Avery Cross, a young police officer. Their lives collide and coalesce in this “decade-spanning triptych of crime and punishment, choice and consequence”. Supported by Eva Mendes, Ben Mendelsohn, Mahershala Ali and Ray Liotta, this modern American classic is bound to leave you in a state of slack-jawed awe.
Zomboat! (ThreeNow, October 17)
Riffing on Edgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead, the British horror comedy Zomboat! swaps-out The Winchester for an unsteady canal boat. Realising it’s the end of the world, sisters Kat and Jo (Leah Brotherhead and Cara Theobold) make for the refuge of Birmingham’s locks and waterways with a motley crew of curious companions. Why? Because zombies can’t swim. A welcome change from the nihilism of 28 Days Later and The Walking Dead, this “wacky, fantasy version of the apocalypse” has been described as the “perfect three-hour binge”.
Murdaugh: Death in the Family (Disney+, October 15)
Inspired by the popular Murdaugh Murders podcast and true crime documentary, this stranger-than-fiction drama details the downfall of one of South Carolina’s most powerful legal dynasties. Severance’s Patricia Arquette and Jason Clarke (who’s rocking a crime of a hairdo) are the heads of the Murdaugh family. Their luxurious lives are turned upside down when their son is involved in a fatal boating accident and, as a series of spine-chilling secrets come to light, their picture-perfect veneer begins to crack.
Pick of the Flicks: The Alto Knights (Neon, October 20)
If you’re a sucker for some gangster fare, this mob drama is an offer you can’t refuse. Just like Tom Hardy playing two roles in in Legend, Robert De Niro is Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, big-shot mafiosos both vying for control of the mean streets of mid-century New York. When you’ve played Vito Corleone, Al Capone and Jimmy Conway, it’s easy to cycle through the greatest hits for a paycheck, but “just when you think you’re out, he pulls you back in”. Despite The Alto Knights singing a familiar tune, there’s a bucketload of fun to be had.
