The UK has been credited with creating some incredible TV series over the last few decades. Just to name a few of the favourites that took the world by storm, there is Sherlock, Luther and Happy Valley. But there is another show that some people were apprehensive about at the start, yet now they are calling it the “best TV drama series ever made”.

If you look at review sites, many people who ended up falling in love with the show say they had to be strongly convinced to start watching it. But once they did, they never stopped. The BBC period drama first aired in 2012 and is based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, who worked as a midwife in the East End of London.

As many of you will have guessed by now, the series is Call the Midwife.

The story begins in 1957 and follows a group of nurse midwives as they care for local families, all while navigating the social, political and personal challenges of the era.

One reviewer said: “Call the Midwife, based upon the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, is the best TV series I’ve ever had the sheer pleasure of watching. It’s less of a viewing and more of an immersive experience.”

Another added: “It’s by far the best ever TV drama series with a superb cast depicting life in early 60s.”

A third said: “One of the best shows of our time. The writing is superb and each character remains true to who they are.”

Others were just as enthusiastic. One reviewer wrote: “I cannot give this show enough stars, it deserves 100 stars!” while another added: “Best British Drama. Most appropriate. Call the Midwife happens to be one of my most favourite shows to watch.”

On Rotten Tomatoes the show has an audience score of 95% and it has won multiple awards over the years.

It’s also been a consistent ratings hit, with nearly 12 million people watching during its most popular seasons.

Created by Heidi Thomas and produced by Neal Street Productions, Call the Midwife has now run for 14 seasons, with a 15th on the way in 2026.

A two-part Christmas special set in Hong Kong and Poplar is also due to air later this year.

On top of that, a feature film and a prequel spin-off series set during the Blitz have both been announced.

All episodes of Call the Midwife are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
