Avocado on toast may be a simple meal but it ticks all the right boxes when it comes to creating a satisfying snack.

It’s healthy, it’s quick to prepare and it’s deliciously tasty, so what’s not to like? While the pair do make a winning combination, mashed avocado on its own can arguably taste a little bland and so the dish can benefit from an extra ingredient to liven it up. There’s a whole array of different options you can choose from, whether it’s adding chopped tomatoes, an egg or just a drizzle of olive oil, but food experts argue there is one ingredient that will make the dish taste “life changing” – and that’s marmite.

Yes, marmite is definitely one of life’s love it or hate it ingredients, but if you fall into the first category then it’s certainly worth a try.

Food experts at Ocado said: “You either love it or you’re lying, right? Marmite. Meet avocado and Marmite. The nutty, buttery (nuttery?) goodness of the avocado goes perfectly with the salty yumminess of Marmite. The only thing is what to call it, Avomite or Marmocado?”

Marmite provides a slightly salty, rich and savoury flavour that helps add depth to the flavour of the avocado, and perfectly contrasts with its buttery creaminess.

Recipe developer Faith VanderMolen from The Conscientious Eater said: “Marmite Avocado Toast – life changing! Once you add Marmite to your avocado toast, you’ll never go back!”

She added: “If you’ve never tried Marmite before, my recommendation is to not try it plain! It is a super salty, rich spread and isn’t meant to be eaten on its own.

“My best tip is to spread a very thin layer onto some toast and then top it with something creamy like butter or avocado. Then, instead of being the star of the show, the Marmite simply acts as a flavourful seasoning.”

Food experts recommended spreading a layer of Marmite onto a piece of toast and then placing your mashed avocado on top. From here you can layer up the dish with any extra toppings and seasonings that you choose, but experts say mushrooms and tomatoes pair well with Marmite, as well as soft-boiled eggs, so you can try a few different combinations to mix things up.

Recipe experts at Olive explain: “Toast 2 pieces of seeded wholemeal toast, then spread liberally with butter and marmite. Mash half an avocado with sea salt and divide between the slices of toast. Cut into fingers and serve with soft-boiled eggs for dipping.”
