Jennifer’s Body is more celebrated than ever 16 years removed from its botched release, leading to talks of a sequel from the creative team behind the original.

Director Karyn Kusama spoke to Deadline about the idea, which is currently in the works from writer Diablo Cody.

“I know she’s working on it right now, and I’m very excited to hear what comes of it,” said Kusama. “I know some of the bones of it, so I’m not going to give anything away, but it sounds fun and crazy like the first film. And I have no doubt that Diablo will do something absolutely incredible with it.”

Kusama also spoke on the 2009 film’s unlikely cult status.

“I’m just so grateful that the film managed to find its audience, perhaps on a different timeline than any of us might have expected or hoped for, but I’m just so thankful that the work continues to speak to people. I’m just so satisfied by that.”

Cody told Bloody Disgusting last year that she wants to make the sequel. “I am not done with Jennifer’s Body … I need to partner with people who believe it in as much as I do and that hasn’t really happened yet. I need someone to believe in it who has a billion dollars.”

Amanda Seyfried has expressed interest in reprising her role as protagonist Needy alongside Megan Fox as Jennifer.

In Jennifer’s Body, a newly-possessed high school cheerleader turns into a succubus who specializes in killing her male classmates, leaving it up to her best friend to put an end to the horror.

Johnny Simmons, J.K. Simmons, Amy Sedaris, Adam Brody, and Kyle Gallner round out the cast.
