The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) is studying possible charges against retired generals and other individuals allegedly calling for an uprising against the government, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. said Friday.
“Our Philippine National Police (PNP), particularly our CIDG, are studying what are the possible cases that may be filed… Not only against the retired generals, but every individual who is calling for our AFP to stage a coup or withdraw support (for the government) and form a junta,” Brawner said in a radio interview.
The outrage from some former officials and members of the public comes amid the controversy over alleged anomalous flood control projects involving the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), contractors and certain government officials.
Brawner appealed to the public to stop entertaining such ideas, saying these actions would not be good for the country.
He assured that the AFP remains “solid and professional” despite the political noise, emphasizing that the military continues to perform its duties responsibly.
“Even I am angry at the corruption, but we are (doing our jobs) properly,” said Brawner.

Meanwhile, the AFP chief clarified that they are not against retired generals joining or encouraging others to participate in peaceful rallies, but he urged them not to get active members of the military involved in unlawful acts.
Brawner mentioned that the AFP is already dealing with a lot of problems such as improving the country’s internal security operations, territorial defense—particularly in the West Philippine Sea—and the monitoring of spies, to name a few, which need to be addressed.
When asked if there were any AFP members who joined the protests, Brawner said there were none and that the organization is “closely monitoring” its members.
Brawner earlier admitted that some retired officers had called for the military’s withdrawal of support against Marcos amid public protests over the flood control anomalies revealed last month.
