Celebrity styling has gotten very referential. It’s all about archival pulls and breathing new life into old garments, like this week, when Emma Stone made Gwyneth Paltrow’s silky green set from Great Expectations famous again.

On Wednesday, Stone wore the iconic two-piece set from Donna Karan’s SS96 collection in New York City, and the internet (myself included) can’t stop talking about it. The all-green outfit is as chic now as it was then—fortunately, there are some pretty great lookalikes that don’t require archive access or Ebay expertise.

But it’s not just the reference that I’m obsessed with; what really stands out about this re-wear is that the look doesn’t feel out of place in 2025. That silky slip skirt is as much a wardrobe staple now as it was in the ‘90s—Zoë Kravitz and Emily Blunt have both recently rocked a slip, and just last week Martha Stewart wore the effortlessly elegant style with a cozy turtleneck sweater.

Not only did Stone’s outfit prove that Paltrow is a forever fashion icon, but it reinforced my belief that no fall wardrobe is complete without a slip skirt. IMO, it’s just as versatile as your jeans, but a lot chicer. If you don’t own one yet, I rounded up my favorites below, from $34.

8 Timeless Slip Skirts for Fall 2025

Modegal Midi Slip Skirt

Amazon

To get Stone’s designer look for less, you can grab Modegal’s $34 slip skirt in Apple Green. This pick has a stretchy elastic waistband and, despite its low price point, “looks and feels expensive,” according to shoppers.

Lauren Ralph Lauren Satin Charmeuse Midi Skirt

Nordstrom

This taupe skirt from Lauren Ralph Lauren is a great lookalike for Stewart’s stone brown style. The only real difference (though small) is the fit; while Stewart’s hangs straight down, this one is more drapey, flaring out subtly at the end.

J.Crew Gwen Lace-Trim Slip Skirt

J. Crew

This is the one I tell everyone to buy. I got the 2024 version of J.Crew’s Gwen slip skirt last year and have worn it almost weekly since. The length makes it perfect for year-round wear—I rock it in summer with heels and in winter with knee-high boots—the material feels seriously luxurious, and the stretchy waistband makes this comfortable enough for all-day wear.

Lululemon Satin Midi Skirt

Lululemon

I was shocked to discover this skirt while looking through Lululemon’s sale section the other day. Not only are the champagne color and drapey fit stunning (and pretty unexpected for the athletic brand), but the style is 50 percent off. While Lululemon isn’t typically where most of us go for elevated pieces, shoppers swear that this slip is “so comfortable, extremely well made,” and versatile enough for the office, date nights, and everything in between.

Quince Silk Maxi Skirt

Quince

Quince’s 100-percent silk skirt is luxurious without being expensive—it seems hard to achieve, but even our picky fashion editors are impressed by the high-quality material. It’s also machine washable, stretchy at the waist, and available in 10 classic colors, like this timeless black.

Vince Bias-Cut Satin Slip Skirt

Nordstrom

I’m a huge fan of Vince, especially the brand’s satin pieces. They hang just right, the material is ridiculously soft, and, somehow, it looks even more expensive IRL. This bias-cut skirt hangs just right and is available in a fall-perfect burgundy.

Madewell Satin Midi Slip Skirt

Madewell

Chocolate brown is fall’s ‘It’ color, so of course this Madewell slip skirt in the perfect espresso hue made my list. I also love that sexy-but-practical side slit. Yes, it shows a little leg, but it also makes for way easier movement.

Banana Republic Bias-Cut Sequin Maxi Skirt

Banana Republic

Finally, we’ve got the one I want to wear to all of this year’s holiday parties. Banana Republic’s sequin slip skirt is festive, chic, and the perfect statement piece. And while that flashy material can be intimidating, there is an easy way to rock it. Rather than going all-in on the glam, consider pairing the skirt with a more low-key top, like a simple white T-shirt or even an oversized sweater.
