An incredible 11-day train journey takes passengers across the world’s most beautiful country. KiwiRail, New Zealand’s state-owned train operator, runs an almost two-week-long journey between Wellington and Queenstown through Great Journeys New Zealand.
Over 11 days, the ‘Spectacular South’ route takes passengers across three train lines through Marlborough, Kaikoura, Christchurch, Punakaiki, and Franz Josef. Half of the train journey is along New Zealand’s east coast, and the second half is along the west. Those aboard can experience the Southern Alps and glaciers, see whales and dolphins, and explore the home of the sacred Pounamu and ancient forests. There is also the chance to go to a Marlborough vineyard, Te Papa Museum, the West Coast treetop walk, Punakaiki pancake rocks and blowholes walk, and the Cook Strait ferry crossing.
The tour is recommended for those who “enjoy free time to create their own adventure while having the structure of a guided expert”.
Along the way, passengers receive 10 breakfasts, four dinners, one lunch, and one meal on the train. They will stay in five and five-star hotels across the 10 nights.
