New Zealand Football’s General Manager of People & Finance, Tarryn McKenzie, recently took part in the prestigious FIFA Women in Football Leadership Programme held at the Home of FIFA in Zurich, Switzerland.
The initiative, one of 13 FIFA Women’s Development Programmes, brings together female leaders from across the globe to strengthen women’s representation in football and to build a powerful network of wāhine in decision-making roles.
This year’s cohort featured 25 representatives from all six football confederations, each playing a key role in shaping the future of the sport.
McKenzie was nominated for the programme by New Zealand Football CEO Andrew Pragnell and will continue the next phase of the course in Paris, France.
Reflecting on her experience, McKenzie describes her time in Zurich as a key moment in her professional journey:
“Being surrounded by women from across the globe each leading within their own football ecosystem reminded me that while our contexts differ, our challenges and aspirations often echo each other,” she says.
“We explored how to lead with our heart, how to influence with impact, and how to create environments where others can thrive.”
McKenzie returned home with a renewed sense of confidence and clarity about how to elevate her people, her organisation, and the game itself.
“What stood out most was hearing from incredible women leading within FIFA and feeling proud as a New Zealander to see two Kiwi women in FIFA leadership roles already on the panel, showing that pathways for women in sport and leadership already exist here.”
To other women aspiring to lead in football, McKenzie offers simple but powerful advice:
“Take the big role and don’t doubt yourself. Build your network and surround yourself with people who can help you grow.”
