The 19-year-old critically injured after falling from a roof of a Dunedin flat has been revealed as a promising Southland rugby representative.
Otago University student Jayden Broome fell from the roof of a two-story flat on the corner of Castle St and Dundas St in Dunedin on Monday night, as reported by The Southland Tribune.
Earlier this year, Broome was named in Rugby Southland’s 2025 Rugby Academy Squad.
He also made an appearance off the bench for the Southland Stags during an NPC pre-season hitout against Otago in July.
Police said they believed he fell while trying to take a group photo.
Emergency services were called to a property on Castle Street just after 10pm.
The man was taken to hospital in a critical condition, a police spokesperson said.
“Police are making enquiries into the incident.”
Police had earlier been called to the street for crowd control.

The Southland Tribune has reported Broome was in a coma and in a stable condition.
A university spokesperson confirmed the injured person was a student.
“Our thoughts are with the student and his whānau during this extremely difficult time. University staff are supporting the student, his whānau and fellow students to ensure they have the care and assistance they need.
“Out of respect for the privacy of this young man and his whānau, the university will not be providing further information.”
Broome (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Wharara), a loose forward, was named as captain of the New Zealand Maori under-18 squad last year when he was still at Gore’s Māruawai College.
A Givealittle page had been set up for Broome’s family, which had raised more than $14,000 by Wednesday night.
“The money will go to Jayden’s Mum (Toni) and Dad ( Darren) to help them navigate this difficult situation while Jayden is in hospital and in recovery.”
