Emmy-winning comedy writer and producer Dan McGrath died last week at age 61.

McGrath, best known for being a writer and producer on “Saturday Night Live,” “The Simpsons,” and “King of the Hill” died on Friday, Nov. 14 at NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn, New York.

His sister, Gail Garabadian, confirmed his death to the Hollywood Reporter, noting that he suffered from a stroke.

McGrath, who grew up in Brooklyn and attended Regis High School in Manhattan, studied at Harvard University, where he honed his comedy writing skills while working for “The Harvard Lampoon.” In 1991, he brought his funny jokes and character to the writer’s room at “SNL.”

Scoring a writing credit on 24 episodes, he shares a 1992 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing in a Variety or Music Program for “SNL” with other comedy greats, including Adam Sandler and Rob Schneider.

After leaving Studio 8H, McGrath wrote for 50 episodes of “The Simpsons” between 1992 and 1994. Some of the more popular episodes he contributed to include “The Devil and Homer Simpson,” “Time and Punishment,” “Bart of Darkness,” “Treehouse of Horror” installments, “Boy-Scoutz ’n the Hood,” and “Homer’s Phobia.”

Between 1996 and 1998, he also scored a producing credit on 24 episodes of the iconic animated sitcom. Per the Hollywood Reporter, he was fired twice from the show. Still, in 1997, he and the show’s other writers won the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program for the “Homer’s Phobia.”

From 2003 to 2009, McGrath lent his writing talents on 11 episodes of “King of the Hill,” which include “Full Metal Dust Jacket” and “The Minh Who Knew Too Much.” He also earned a producing credit for 28 episodes of that show during that time period.

According to his obituary, McGrath is survived by his mother, Eleanor; his brother Michael and wife Caroline; his brother Peter; his sister, Gail; his nephew Dillon; and his nieces Kylie and Emma. His family asks for donations to Regis High School in his memory.
