KUCHING: Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) will work with New Zealand’s University of Canterbury to strengthen its talent pipeline and drive innovation in the energy sector.

This comes after Petros signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the university on Tuesday (Nov 18).

The agreement focuses on developing academic programmes for professional growth and pursuing applied research which fosters innovation while addressing challenges in the energy industry.

“This collaboration will enhance the capabilities and capacity of our staff. Its impact will be huge,” said Petros chairman Tan Sri Hamid Bugo.

Besides Petros, the university also signed an MOU with the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC).

Its Business School executive dean, Prof Paul Ballantine, said the agreements emphasised mutual learning, research exchange and educational collaboration.

“These partnerships also reflect the university’s commitment to two-way engagement, learning from Malaysia’s innovation, regional leadership and cultural depth while sharing our own expertise in teaching, research and global education,” he said.

He added that the university was keen to contribute to Sarawak’s future development through education, research and innovation.
